This picturesque medieval town, on the boundary between Umbria and Lazio, is situated on the slopes of Cetona Mount, which overlook Paglia Valley. Its territory is characterized by the so called “ badlands “, big clay and sand erosions, which form a lunar landscape.

Since the Etruscan-Roman age San Casciano was famous for its thermal waters. In fact the PariSan Casciano dei Bagni Siena Tuscany Italysh ( which is a church with baptismal functions ) was called “ Santa Maria De Balneo”. If in the Roman Age its territory was crossed East by Via Cassia ( Cassia Road ), in the Middle Age it took advantage of Via Francigena ( Francigena Road ), which crossed its western territories. ( this road today is improperly called Via Cassia – Cassia Road ); an international route which since seventh century A.D. substituted Cassia Road, which was impracticable because of the Valdichiana’s swamping. In 995 the Marquis Ugo of Tuscany donated the “ Curtis de Bagno “ to San Salvatore of Mount Amiata’s   Abbey. But in 1081 the monks addressed to the Emperor against Aldobrandeschi’s demands. Since thirteenth century till the half of fourteenth century it was owned by Viscounts of Campiglia, a family linked to the area of Orvieto; In 1412 Monaldo Visconti subjected definitively  San Casciano to Siena. Under grand-ducal rule the centre became a spa on a international scale. In 1607 the Grand duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I, built the refined porch which nowadays ennobles spa, characterized by 43 thermal springs at 42°C. We indicate the Gothic Collegiate Church of San Leonardo and the Church of Santa Concezione, that show some frescos by Niccolò Circignani, called “ Il Pomarancio “.

In the territory of San Casciano, there is Fighine’s Castle, from which you can admire a beautiful view over Valdichiana. Fighine was hardly contested by Siena and Orvieto. In 1441 it was annexed to the  Republic of Siena, to which is due the final restoration  of the castle, in 1446. In the vicinity there is the village of Palazzone, wine production centre, where you can visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which is characterized by  a Baroque Internal.

In front of Radicofani and Mount Amiata there is Colle sul Rigo, overlooked by a stately medieval Tower.

The Parish of San Paolo, The Church of San Giovanni and a seventeenth century well, situated in the centre of the square, are of great artistic importance.
